Education

One of YELA’s most important functions is to educate the youth of Kosrae about the value and importance of the unique ecosystem of the Ka Forest. Elementary schools, Kosrae’s high school and the College of Micronesia bring their students here for field trips. For many of these students, this is their first visit to the Ka Forest.

On Saturday, January 27, students from COM’s Tropical Pacific Environments (SC-117) class toured the Yela Ka forest with Dr. Tholman Alik to learn about this unique and sacred ecosystem.
On Saturday, February 25, students from COM’s Environmental Studies (SC-111) class toured the Yela Ka forest with Dr. Tholman Alik to learn about this unique and sacred ecosystem.

On one occasion, Kosrae’s State Historic Preservation Office and YELA partnered to circumnavigate the island of Kosrae. The purpose of this circumnavigation was to educate youth about Kosraean navigation practices. A highlight of this trip was a visit to the famous Yela Ka Forest, home to the largest collection of Terminalia carolensis trees in the world.
